It's just a round passive RFID chip, that can be read and written to. First used in the US Border patrol pistols. The tags used then would hold 700 characters of information which maintain the weapon history. So HK would basically have a pile of serialized RFID chips that would correspond to their serial #'s for their firearms. For more information of the DoD's mandate on suppliers selling to DoD of the implementation of passive RFID's tags, there's a document available here:

I had forgotten about these as I haven't seen a thread about this in quite some time. Are you guys leaving these alone or popping them out? Two of my HK45s are from the first year of production (2007, AH date code) and have sub 1000 serial numbers (126-000XXX). I bought them used, and their trigger pull is slightly smoother and lighter than my still NIB 2021 (CB date code, 126-101XXX) HK45.
